LATEST FROM FIJI.
Auckland, July 31. The schooner Emu arrived to-day from Fiji, with later news from the group. She left on the 23rd.
Levuka, July 23. H.M. Barracouta left hero with the Governor to-day for Nadi, the proposed seat of Government. H. VI ,S. Pearl left for New Hebrides on the 15th inst.
Mr M‘Mamara, teller of the Fiji Bank hero, died of typhoid fever. A Sanitary Board has been formed at Levuka.
At Savu, a prisoner was sentenced to death for child, murder. The prisoner’s wife had been confined, and to save his wife’s life he killed the child by burning it alive, in accordance with Fiji custom. The Native Police have been interfering with tho white population so much as to cause, general indignation. A public meeting was held on the subject, but nothing was done. A public agitation as to Kandavu being made the port of call for the mail steamers is being got up. The general opinion is that Levuka’s claim is paramount. Ex King Cakabou has recovered from the measles.
▲ fire occurred at Bau on the kith, and destroyed the principal public buildings ; and one sick native perished in the flames.
A dinner to the Bau murderers is spoken of in the Fiji ‘Times’ as the latest thing on the tapis in Levuka,
