SYDNEY JAMES, Accountant, Valuator, and General Agent, Princes street, respectfully »olieits your Vote and Interest for Re-election.
LEITH WARD, R CHARLES SMITH will Address the Ratepayers of Leith Ward at Hardies North Dunedin Hotel, George street, Tbia (Saturday) Evening, at 7.30. RM‘KE N 2 I E Will Address the Electors of EAST WARD In Crickmore’s Assembly Rooms, on Saturday Evening, July 31, at eight o’clock. TG THE RATEPAYERS OF HIGH WARD.
ENTLEMEN, —As you are aware that I am a Candidate for the representation of High Ward in the City Council, I take this mode of addressing you in preference to the (to my mind at least) objectionable practice of wandering about from one hotel to another, or the more humiliating one of making a personal canvas soliciting votes. From the fact of my being a resident for nearly twenty-two years in Dunedin, it is needless for me to'say that I am well acquainted with every portion of it; and from my practical experience and three years’ previous services in the Council, 1859 to' 1862, I am quite aware of the nature of the duties required of one who aspires to the position of City Councillor. Amongst the works requiring immediate attention I consider the swamps in the lowlying parts of the City are a standing menace to the health of the citizens, and should be filled up to the street levels without delay at the expense of the owners ; or failing that, be done by the Corporation with the assistance of prison labor. As a sharenolder in the late Water Company I may say that I always voted for the sale of the works to the Corporation, I should much regret the establishment of rival Gasworks by the Corporation, and should prefer purchasing the present works, provided they can be obtained at a fair and reasonable price, and after examination arc found to bo equal to the requirements of the City. By this course the trouble, cost, and annoyance of breaking up the streets of the City would be avoided.
I am of opinion that the Fire Brigade should be treated in a liberal manner by the Corpora tion. as the arduous duties so cheerfully rendered by that body are deserving of the highest praise. I am glad to know that the recent misunderstanding with the Corporation is likely to be satisfactorily arranged. With a view to facilitate traffic"! should be agreeable to the construction of a properly organised system of tramways in different parts of the City, certain restrictions. Before committing the citizens to the enormous expense of underground drainage I should only be agreeable to this being done after obtaining the opinion of the ablest authorities upon the subject. In the meantime the kerbing, channelling, and forming the streets to a proper shape should be gone on with as means are available. In the matter of the widening of Princes street I can only express my astonishment at t he magnitude of the awards, and I feel entirely at a loss to know how the amount has been arrived at. However, lam of opinion that the Council is committed to the widening of the street. Should you do mo the honor to return me as one of your representatives I shall give my best attention to the important duties confided to mo. HENRY FREDTT. HARDY.
