GENTLEMEN, —I beg to intimate that I retire from my candidature for election to the City Council as your representative. I am free to adopt this course, inasmuch as my nomination did not follow upon a requisition or any expressed desire on the part of a considerable number of ratepayers that I should offer myself, but was resolved upon at the last moment, after conference with a few friends. My .retirement, therefore, will not cause any disappointment of the previous arrangements of the electors.
I now retire, because it does not appear to me that the matters which I look upon as of the first importance to the Ward, particularly in connection with the Princes street Widening, excite a sufficient degree of interest in the electors, outside of those personally affected, to warrant rny putting them and myself to the trouble and expense of a contested election. And, moreover, I should not care to assume an office-which would bring a tax upon my time mid attention that t can ill afford, without being assured of a full measure of support and sympathy on the part of the body of electors. I am, &c., Dunedin, July 31,1875. SOUTH WARD ELECTION. SCANLAN RESIGNED IN FAVOR OF ROJgBOTHAM. GENTLEMEI^— I beg to resign my Candidature of South Ward in favor of Mr R.
