On Wednesday night Mr Barry moved as an amendment that the financial arrangements of the Government are unsatisfactory, and it was negatived by 32 to 22. Many freetraders are unwilling to support either the ultra-protec-tionist, Mr Berry, or the Government, and refrained from voting. In the meanwhile, discontent with the tariff is slowly but surely growing. Already defections from the Minis, terial ranks in the Assembly have occurred, and some of the most rabid protectionists now face the Ministry in opposition. A monster meeting of the League is to be held this evening in the Princess's Theatre, and last, but not least, a full meeting of publicans yesterday gavo their voice against the proposed changes. All indications are against the Government proposals becoming law. It is stated as improbable that Judge Dunne will ever again sit on the Bench. On the mail being telegraphed from Adelaide, the 'Argus' had special wires laid on direct to their office, with a staff of operators, and had 20,000] words transmitted, containing the whole of their correspondents' letters, making over thirteen columns of the • Argus,' besides the ordinary summary of English news, comprising over 6,000 words more. After a meeting of the bank managers Ton Wednesday, Mr Stratford, the Manager of the English and Scottish, died suddenly. A Communist prisoner has escaped from Noumea to Fiji. Another batch of dqwitte has arrived at Noumea.
