THE GOVERNMENT COTTAGES.

To the Editor.

Sib, —As I have the charge of the Government cottages, I beg to say that the remarks which fell from the presiding magistrate (Mr Bastings) at the Mayor’s Court yesterday were entirely uncalled for, and the tone in which they were delivered scarcely compatible with the dignity of a Justice of the Peace, For Mr Bastings’s information I beg to say that the person (one of the tenants) who appeared before him, and was the cause of kis remarks, was sent out to the Province about eight months ago by the Agent-General; and as those cottages were put up for the use of immigrants, I fail to see anything “monstrous” or like a “perfect faree "in letting such persons a house. If wr Bastings had allowed mete inform him that the man Le Massurie went into the cettage about eight months ago as a “newly-arrived ” immigrant, had kept comparatively steady, and continued to pay his rent until lately, anc that when it appeared to me that he became otherwise, and got in arrears for rent, I ejected him from the bouse, there would have bten no osession for bis curt remarks.—l am. Ac., W. Hooper. Dunedin, July 21.
