THE HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board to-day was attended by Messrs. Ramsay (in the chair), Davie, Reeves, Mercer, Thomson, M'Neil, and Tewsley. The following was the principal business transacted: —

The Engineer intimated that weather permitting tho survey of the harbor will be completed about the end of the present month, and the result would be submitted shortly afterwards —in all probability about the7th proximo. The Works Committee reported—(l) That the Corporation still declined to supply the Stuart aud Jetty street jetties with water unless the Government tank was removed, and that tho attention of the Government had been directed to the matter. (2) Recommending that the Government be requested to arrange with Mr Walkem as to its resuming possession of the powder magazines at Dunedin with a view to the management of them being handed over to the Board. (3.) That Kincaid, M'Qneen, and Co. had been granted a site near Pelichet Bay at a rental of LI per month on which to build the dredge, they to give up possession of the site without compensation for any improvement, and to be allowed to remove any temporary buildings or improvements, (5.) A subcommittee had been appointed to confer with the Corporation for lighting Rattray street wharf.

The Finance Committee, aftercareful dclibe ration on the question of increase to the salaries of various officers of the Board, recommended as follows ; —Deputy harbor-master an increase of L 23, marring his salary at the rate of L3OO a year; four pilots, increase of L 35, malting thoir salaries L3OO a year ; one pilot, increase L 35, making his salary L 235 (these advances to be inclusive of all allowances, excepting' actual railway fares paid in the performance of duties); collector of jetty dues, increase LSO, making his salary L3OO a year; one assistant ditto (Faalds), increase of L 3 6s Bd, making his salary Ll2 per month ; one assistant ditto (Cartgr), increase of LI 6s Bd, making his salary LlO per month; and that Captain Thomson be requested to give a son of the late Capt. Dickie, occasionally employment as a clerk by him, a trial as collector of jetty dues at Port Chalmers, and to furnish records of shipping and cargo that may bs required from Port Chalmers —remuneration to be at tho rate of LSO per annum. Thecommittee reported that they had not yet considered the question of a steam tug and Captain Thomson’s memo, thereon, but tho Secretary had written to the Government te ascertain whether they would be likely to give any substantial encouragement in the event of the Board taking the matter up. . Mr Reeves’ proposal to increase the salary of the principal Collector of Jetty Dues to L 325 a year was negatived, only Mr Mercer and the proposer voting for it. The report was adopted.

The engineer requested authority to engage, at 12s a-day, a clerk of works for the Rattray street jetty extension, whose duties would be to watch the driving of the piles, and to carefully and constantly superintend the carrying out of the works in accordance with the drawings and specifications. The members of the Board expressed themselves s! rongly against the proposed appointment as unnecessiry; and a resolution was adopted requesting Mr Stephens, the inspector of works, to attend to the work, it being urged that it was part of the work he was engaged to do. The varioue committees were reappointed.
