Delhi is to be his headquarters. Joseph Bulthout, secretary of the Norwich Building Society, has been sentenced to fifteen years’ penal servitude for embezzlement and forgery. Eighteen Liverpool gentlemen were brought before a magistrate for participating in a 'cockfight, and thirteen were fined L 5 each. . The opening of tho Brighton Aquarium on Sunday is pronounced illegal, and the Court of Queen’s Bench decided, on the appeal in special cases, that the company are liable to a penalty of L2OO for every offence. A formidable miners’ strike in Belgium necessitated an appeal to the military. Simi lar disturbances are reported from many districts in France.
In Savoy, an entire village was burned by children playing with matches in a barn. The ‘ Kcho ’ declares that the increasing distension among the Bonapartisita causes great anxiety at Chiselhurst. ,M. Rouher, Who is not popular with the country mem hers’ party, was cent for by the ex-Emprcss who desired to know the actual state of affairs before proceeding to Spain with the Prince. Cardinal Manning assured the German Bishops of the sjmyathy and concurrence of the Knglish Catholic priesthood with them in the conflict with the State. Several more Bishops have beem exiled, imprisoned, or fined for ecclesiastical offences Riots have occurred in Western Prussia, occasioned by the unpopularity of clerical appointment'. They were suppressed by the military. Press prosecutions aro increasingly numerous. The ‘Dailj Telegraph’s’ correspondent has paid a second fine of 60 thalers.
The Tiber Commission has reported against the exclusion of the river from the city. Mr Justice Grove and a special jury have been engaged for three days in the hearing of a most extraordinary action for seduction. The plaintiff was Mr J. Smedley, formerly the landlord of the Midland Hotel Leicester, and defendant the son of a hosiery manufacturer of the same town. The action was brought to recover damages for the seduction of Sarah Ann Smedley, daughter of plaintiff. The girl was put into the witness box and distinctly swore to the defendant’s having met her on several occasions, having taken her to a house of ill-fame in Leicester, and having eventually seduced her. On the other hand, the defendant swore he had never walked with Miss Smedley and had no recollection of ever having seen her. Defendant’s father admitted paying the girl a sum of money previous to her confinment, but said he had done so without the knowledge of his so si, wl o was at that time preparing to take his degree, and who would, he feared, be anno.' ed by being informed of the matter.— r Justice
