The local paper says that the cottages builc by the General Government at Oamaru are now occupied by permanent residents of the township. The timber trade at Gatlin’s River is not ss brisk as it used to be, and that the lessees of the “big mill ” have been instructed to reduce their supply to about one ship-load in the week. This will lead to paying off a number of hands. A few men had a very narrow escape at the end of the Clutha Railway, the other day, when two trucks, which had been detached from the engine, started off on their own accord, down the incline towards the new bridge. The men managed to jump out before great speed was attained, but the trucks kept on their way till approaching the bridge, when the debris which covered the rails terminated their career by toppling them over into a paddock. -- Mr R. R. Jones and Mr H. White are candidates for the Mayoral chair of Milton. It is not, however, supposed that Mr Goodalljsvill give up the honor without another struggleT An accident occurred on the Clutha line of railway, at Bon Accord, on Saturday last. As the engine was passing along at a slow speed, with a number of trucks in front, the points at the spot had apparently not been attended to, and the first trnck went off the rails, dragging the others with it. The trucks were smashed, and a few severe bruises were sustained by some passengers who were upon the engine. The settlers of the Owake and Ahuriri districts presented the Rev. Mr Bannerman last Saturday with the sum of L 22 6s for the purchase of a horse, as a mark of their gratitude to him for the n onthly visits he has endeavored to pay their districts, to render them Sabbath services, and to enable him to continue this service till fuller and permanent airangemeuts are made for religious ordinances.
