. Melbourne, June 23. The election for the Western Province to the Upper House yesterday occasioned more than the usual interest of Council elections. The candidates -were Mr Samuel Wi'son, the wealthy squatter, and donor of L 3,000 to the University, and Mr Anderson, a local man, of some means. The squatter prevailed, and secured his election by a large majority in a strong squatting district. Early yesterday morning a fire occurred on the premises of Thomas Luke and Co, tea merchants, King street, which were totally destroyed, with the stock. The adjoining premises of Francis and Macpherson were much damaged by fire. Luke was insured for 1 A3,000 in the following offices :—Australian Alliance, Loudon and Lancashire, National, Northern and Victoria. On Monday night, whilst two men named Smith and Millist were generating hydrogen fas for a lime light, at the rear of the Theatre loyal, an explosion took place; Smith was killed on the spot, and Millist was badly injured. Both men were blown through a a iron roof, at a distance of 12ft. Judge Molesworth having practically declared against the illegality of the Government selling the frontages to the reserves, the matter has been brought before Parliament, and has created a strong fee ing. The Irish residents have resolved to celebrate the O’Connell centenary, on thes»h August, by a banquet and procession. The cofferdam at the new wharves on the south bank of the Yarra gave way with a. fre.-h in the river. About 100 men are out of employment. '
