FORTY STRIPES SAVE ONE.

To the Editor. Slß,—Having patiently waited for some time to ascertain whether the Rev, Dr. Roseby would condescend to interpret his “dark say- . ing ” relative to his assertion that the Church of England imposes upon her members forty stripes save one, when almost in the same breath he professed to admire the “ fair form of $ I will, with your permission, again ask him a question on this very important subject Whether, as a Christian minister, he regards the thirty-nine articles as forty stripes save one? Does he regard each article as a stripe [and unsuitable for belief? lam aware that many persons who have never perused the said articles think they are too grievous to be borne, and accept with much Belt-satisfaction any statement derogatory to them. Their opinions, however, will notbear inspectionordisenssion. What I maintain is that every Christain (not a mere professor) should believeatleast thirty of those articles, as they are based upon the standard of Christianity—the Bible. Of course, as informer times, people generally now desire their pastors to preach smooth things but the statement that the thirty-nine articles are stripes, as suggested by a recent scribbler is contemptible.—l am, &c., ’ _ T Churchman.
