THE SHARE MAR \ET. Mr Hooper reports that there was rather more activity in the share market last week than for some time past. There is, however, not much change m the value of tho several stocks. National Insurance have receded about Is per share, present price -is. Standards have slightly advanced, nud ore now worth 13s Od. Colonial Banks, 27s National Banks are firm at 78s 6d. Shotovers paid up worth 4s. Arrow River looking up- heticr prospects. Star of the East shares ore held for L 7, dividend 8s per share. Standard Insurance shares continue very firm, and are slowlv nsmg in value. There are not sufficient National Bank shares to supply the demand. Some brisk business was done in Lucknows at the close of last and beginning of this week; they now stand at L 3 7s od. From the minim? manager s report it appeared that the prospects of the company were of a very satisfactory nature, .the tunnel, which was commenced upwards of two and a-half years ago, in order to cut the tested reef at a lower level, is now completed, and 70 feet of stone, varying in thickness from 3ft. to Ift 6in ready to break out and crush. The report also referred to the discovery made in the course of prosecuting the tunnel workings of a new lode of a very rich nature, from which also s.one is now being taken oat for crushing, instructions having been forwarded to the I “ n f-« anag . er , to kee P the stone obtained from these different places separate in order to ascertain the respective yields. The workings on this reef originally known as the Colclough, have now been prosecuted for five years, and those shareholders who have persevered in pushing forward prospecting works such as have been here entailed (the tunnel, alone, costing within a fraction of L 3.000), deserve all the returns they now seem on the eve of enjoying In this case, as in most of the heavy mining ventures, Dunedin capital has had to bear the heavy end of thensk and responsibility through-
