CITY POLICE COURT.
Friday, June 18. (Before his Worship the Mayor and W. J. Larnach, Esq., J.P.’s.)
Drunkenness.—Frances Thomson was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment; and for using obscene language in G-enrge street was fined 20a, in default three davs’ imprisonment.
Obscene Language.—Mary Jane Gibbs, for this offence in St. Andrew street, was fined L 5, in default two months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
Breach op the Peace.—Thomas Hughes, for conducting himself in Rattray street in a disorderly manner, was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment; and James M Lauchlm and James Mulligan, for fighting on the main South road, Green Island, w ; ere each mulcted in a similar penalty. Petty Larceny. Alexander Middlemiss was charged, on the information of Margaret Cox, with stealing a pair drawers from a clothes line in Walker street, on the 18th inat.—The case was clearly proved, and it was stated by the police that several robberies from clotheslines_ had lately taken place iu the same locality. There were other things on the line, but only the drawers were removed.--The Bench iu view of the whole facts—prisoner was not known to the police, and the article stolen wassmall—decided to discharge the accused with a caution.
Assault.-—John M‘Leod, soapmaker, was charged by George Worsdale with assaulting and beating him on the 14th inst. Complainant had gone to defendant for the payment of an account, and on his refusing to allow discount defendant attempted to forcibly put him off the premises.—Defendant was fined 10s and costs. Mary Anne Sutton, charged with assaulting Eliza Johnson, was fined 40s and cost.—ln this case his Worship requested the police to take notice that there had been drinking in the London Tavern on a Sunday night. Neglected Child.—Fredk. Connell, three years old, was sent to the Industrial School for seven years as a negleotedchild.—Sergt. Hanlon stated that the child was illegitimate, and that the mother had for some time paid its guardian for its support. The mother having now left the Colony, and the guardians not being in a Position to support it, they had it brought to tnG Police Station. The police had, therefore, no alternative but to charge the child with being neglected.
