London, June 5. Mr Charles Sladen, of Victoria, and Mr Turville, formerly Private Secretary to Lord Lisgar in Sydney, have been appointed Knight Commanders of St Michael and St. George. A despatch from the Earl of Carnarvon to Governor Barkly, at the Cape, proposes a conference of delegates from the Colonies and States of South Africa for the consideration of a scheme of confederation. Th« San Francisco mails were delivered on* the 2nd of Jnne. June 7. The Australian mails, via Brindisi, were delivered to-day. SPECIAL FOR NEW ZEALAND. v London, June 10. • The shareholders in the Eastern Telegraph Company to-day sanctioned an arrangement with Sir J. Vogel for a submarine cable between New Zealand and Australia. Sir J. Vogel’s substitution of promissory notes for a free system of emigration is causing great dissatisfaction. A deputation from the Laborers’ Union, beaded by Mr Arch and Mr Holloway, in vain urged, a continuance of free passages.
