Oyer a hundred persons assembled on the uval on Saturday afternoon to witness the match between Edwards and Burke. The former had to walk seventy yards while Burke ran a hundred, and the winner was to receive a small stake. In the opinion of a good many Edwards was the victor, but the judge (Mr D. JL. Rhodes) declared it to have been a dead neat. • . ■ A , The match for L 25 a-side, between Collins Young Delaney, of Auckland* was run at Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. There were three events-100, ISO, and 200 yardsthe winner of two out of three to be the winner of the match. la the 100 yards Ace, Collins! v? 8 "y® away, but Delaney caueht 1 him at ,60 yards, and ultimately won by two feetj time, Ilsecs. In the 150 yards race, 1 Delaney was put hack a yard for going over the.!mark before the pistol was fired, and Collins, being again the smartest away obtained a lead of two yards. Delaney, however, caught him at 100 yards, and, after a fine struggle during the last fifty yards, won by a foot; time, 17secs. The ground was rather heavy from the late rains. Delaney having won the .first two races, therefore won the match without the 200 yards race being run. "A match was made directly after, in which Young Delaney backed Thomas Skelly, a .North Island man, to run ten miles in 58 minutes. The stakes are LSO a-side, and P. Butler, a bookmaker, backed time. The match is to be decided within a month.
