There has been a steady business doing this week. Several lines of the cargo of sugars by the Robert Jones have been taken up privately. The yellows and best whites have commanded most attention, these qualities being scarce in the market; best yellows are worth L 33 10s, and best whites L 35. There have been several transactions in tea during tho week ; prices withheld. Hennessy s case brandy has been sold at 325, t°_ > , no change in bulk brandy. Geneva, i I , 1 , 3 h ® ld for 13s 6cl. The New Zealand Distillery is now only in second hands and commands 465, duty paid. Candles are firm at lOld for Brandon s, and 10J-d for Price’s. Cheese continues very high, 10} d being asked and paid. Butter ws quote at Is sd. Hamg and, bacon iu equal quantities, Is Id. Oil stores unchanged. Patna nee is quoted at L 27105. THE LABOR MARKET. Mr. Skene reports that the labor market is very well supplied at present. The only exception is the female department; no fear of being over-stocked with good useful servant girls. Indoor trades are active. Builders are almost at a stand. Plenty of railway work, but too much broken time. Farm and station hands, always needed. Wages Boys and girls, 6s to 15s per week ; house girls, £26 to £4O; hotel ditto, £36 to £52; cooks, barmen, waiters, grooms, &c., 25s to 60s per week: ploughmen, shepherds, &c., £52 to £65 ; carpenters, lolto I 2s 5vSr y a " or ’ ls to ls 6d per hour ; couples, £65 to £9O, and found; gardeners, £65 to £7O, and found; store hands and clerks, dull. SHARE MARKET. Mr J. Reid Mackenzie reports cash sales during the week ending the 12th inst. as follows.—National Bank, L 3 18s; National Insurance, LI 4s: South British, L2 6s; Colonial Bonk, LI 7s ; Standard Insurance, 12s 6d and 12s 9d. Mr Hooper reports that there is little to note in the share market. Quotations of the several stocks may he set down at about last week’s rates. National Insurance are seemingly a little firmer than they were last week, but without rise in price. Standard Insurance have advanced slightly, present price _ 13s to 13s 3d; National Insurance, 24s • Colonial Bank, 275, less 2$ per cent, commission; National Bank, 765; 4 Guardian 1 printing unsaleable, paid-up, L 3, sellers, 40s; Shotovers, paid-up are inquired for at 3a 6d. Titanic Steel Company’s shares, Greymouth, and Walton Park Coal Mini™ Company’s shares unsaleable. Money seems to be further tightening. Mr Frederick H. Evans reports for the week ending to-day an increased activity in the demand for Standard Insurance, National Insurance, and National Bank shores.
