THE LATE MR HAWTHORNE.
It is with sincere regret that we have to chronicle the death, last evening, at his residence, of Mr Stuart Hawthorne, after a long and painful illness. The deceased gentleman was a native of Belfast, Ireland, but went, when a boy, with his parents to Sydney, where he received his education. He matriculated at the Sydney University in 1854, and obtained in that year a scholarship, valued at LSO, for general proficiency. In 1856 he took a prize in chemistry and experimental physics, and in 1857 obtained the Cooper Scholarship of LSO, for distinction in classical literature. His academic career was distinguished, he being head man of his year throughout. He took B.A. in 1857, and M.A. in 1863. After leaving the University he taught for some time in Sydney, and then received the appointment of Head Master of the Ipswich Grammar School, Queensland, whence he came to Dunedin, He was appointed Rector of the Dunedin High School on the Ist December, 1868, and entered on the duties there on the Ist February following. His management of the High School is so well known to our readers that it is unnecessary to refer to it. But this we will say: few were properly able to appreciate the late Mr Hawthorne’s great merits as a teacher; of him as|a man and a citizen nothing but praise can be spoken. He leaves a wife and infant to mourn his loss.
