LATE ITEMS.

Up to three o’clock this afternoon only one engagement had been effected at the Caversham Dspdt—that of a married couple, at L6O per annum. A number of single men have gone to work on the Clutha railway line, and several married couples are making arrangements on their own account. Eighty-nine souls, ex the Earl of Zetland, were forwarded to Invercargill yesterday; and a number will be sent to Tokomairiro, Oamaru, and Palmerston at the earliest opportunity. If those now remaining in the barracks move off as freely as has been the case during the past two days, the barracks will —to use the barrack-roaster’s words —be “cleared” before the week is out. An accident happened this afternoon to one of the boys belonging to the ship Bangitikei. By some means he got his hand in the cogs of the winch, and he was immediately attended to by Dr Dryadale, who found it necessary to amputate one of his fingers. A telegraph station is now open at Carterton, in the Province of Wellington. “ Pro Bono Publico ” writes to us as fellows “I am aware that a line of railway to the Ocean Beach, by way/of Caversham, has been projected by the General Government for some - time past, and is shown on the plans in the Public Works Department. It can be constructed by the Government for from L 3.000 to L 5,000, and it is in length one and a-half shorter than the one projected by the promoters of the private company. I would therefore suggest that the Provincial Council take .immediate action to induce the General Government to work the line at ence, and thereby render futile and hopeless the machinations of a few land speculators to obtain concessions at the expense of the Province, worth at least L 50,000. The Port Chalmers line should be a warning.”
