: .'1 he postal department has received kthi.geti'e that the (Jypbreues arrived at yau Francisco on May 13, her proper date. There wag another good house at I>r Sylves:er’a lust night, and the various tricks and illusions were received with the usual amount of applause. _ A fair representation of “ Rob Roy ” wa j given at the. Princess’s last night, and the hou-c wes well attended. To-night “Tim Lady of ! yons"’ will be produced, Mrs v'. M. hates taking the part of Pauline Mr Steele that of Claude Melnotte. ’

The 1 0,-it says that the General Govern* uQint received by the last steamer from Wellington a long telegram from Mr Vogel but ;U contents were chiefly of a private nr • vc, .nd it contained no reference to the s' ■ic o; Ida health.

We arc favored with information from the agents of the Kanieri Water-iv.ce Company (Limited) that the race is working very favorably. The amount taken last week or water was L 42 13s 6d ; and from the num er of claims which have applied for water there is reason to believe that in the course of three months the rental will exceel LL2O per jweek ; whilst the cost of maintenance is only L 9 per week, exclusive of legal and mining managers’ salaries. On the Provincial Council meeting this afternoon Mr Reid. met the Council with a Government, which not only filled the Treasury benches but compelled the Provincial Solicitor to retain his former scat below the member for Tuapeka. The names and positions of tho new Executive will be found our report of to day’s proce‘ dings b, thr Council. We believe it was intended for Mr Green to have had the control of tha Lauds Lhpartment, but he declined to do so, unless he also had a seat at the Waste Land Board, which Mr Reid declined to give up. Hence Mr Green’s relegation to the Works Department. The new Government will at once proceed to business ; and there is every reason to believe that a week from this will see the end of the session.

In the Canterbury on Wednesday last, Mr H. Turnbull moved—‘‘Thai in the opinion of this Council the manner in which the bunrey Department is conducted is most unsatisfactory and requires the i-nm.ali ito attention of the Government.” His complaints were—first, the bad state of the public maps and records • second, their incorrectness ; third, the department’s persisting in known errors ; and fourth, the amount of patronage that was shown in the letting of contract surveys. If a Commission were appointed with power to take evidence on oath, he believed that he would be able to substantiate some ve’y startling things with regard to roads. After some discussion, in which the C.iicf Surveyor was blame I for the way in which he had allowed men proved to be incompetent tr> remain on his staff, the motion was withdrawn, on the understanding that a Commission should be appointed during the recess to inquire into the management and working of the department. We take the following from the * North Otago Times’:-“Who’ll buy a side of mutton for two shillings ?” was the cry at more than one butcher’s shop on Saturday evening in Thames atrejt; and tho meat offered, though small, was as good as any person could want to eat. This surpasses the old boiling-down times, when shilling legs of mutton went a-begging. Indeed, we lately heard a butcher offer a customer six legs of mutton for half-a- crown.—A match has been arranged between Mr G. M. Lvms’s bm Deception. 5 yre, and Mr B. Robb’s b g Native, 4 yrs, to come off on the Oamaru racecourse on Monday, 7th inat. Conditions - Distance, one mile and a-half ; we:ght, lOdfc ; L2O a side. Deception is the favorite, at about 5 to 4. LlO3 has been collected in aid of the Euphrosyne fund.— The Municipal Council has accepted the tender of the National Bank for its account as follows ;—5 per cent, lor deposit of L 3,000 for three years; 6 per cent, foi L 7.000 for twelve months; and 6 per cent, for L 5.000 ior six months. No exchange or commission to b; charged on tho transmission of interest to debenture holders. Overdraft, if any, at the same rate as given for deposits. 1 he vacant piece of ground at the corner of Liverpool and Bond streets, and bounded by the Bank of Australasia, and the premises of Messrs J, T. Mackerras and Co., will shortly be occupied by a ruildiug now in course of erection for Messrs Cargill, Gibbs, and Co., according to plans drawn up by Mr hj. W. Petrie, architect, The building wi 1 he in r.hc modern Italian style, four storeys high, of a handsome appearance, and consiruneed throughout of concrete. There will bo an entrance in the Bond street front to he ground floor and the extensive cellarage accommodation to be provided j and the upper storeys will be reached by an entrance in Liverpool street—a wide staircase (all in concrete) with ornamental wrought iron banisters leading from the basement to the top floor. The roof will be of slate, surmounted by handsome iron ridging. The rooms, to be used as offices. &c.. number in all twenty -one, and these are of different dimensions, averaging, however, about 18ft. square. The cellars will be five in number, each also about 18ft. square. Work has already been commenced on the ground, and it is anticipated that six months will see the building completed.
