Wellington, May 24. To-day|wflfl observed as a close holiday. A special train conveyed thousands of passengers to the Hutt railway bridge—about fifteen miles from town and seven beyond where the line is generally open. The Minister of Public Works also visited the bridge. Blenheim, May 25. _ A very smart shock of earhquake was experi•need at a quarter to five yesterday afternoon.

Auckland, May 25. A fatal accident occurred on the railway last evening The driver of the train from Auckland to Ellerslie on arrival at the latter place reported that he had met with an obstruction on the line about half-way between Eemuera and Ellerslie. An official was despatched down the line and came upon the mangled remains of a man lying across the metals. He was recognised as W. Shields, a well-known vagrant.
