AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

Auckland, May 22. In the Provincial Council yesterday Mr Sheehan presented a petition from James Burnes, of Wellington, claiming a -rant of land under the forty acres system. Mi Sh ' -han replied to a question that he had received Die whole of his salary as Provincial Secretary, and men than that he had earned it by doing the Provincial Solicitor’s work as well as that of Secretary. He had acquainted the Superintendent of his enforced absence at the opening of the Council. On going into Committee on the Estimates, Mr Sheehan said he had sent in his resignation aa Secretary to the Superintendent, which had been accepted. He assigned urgent private business as the reason for resigning. All the Estimates, except Departmental and Miscellaneous, have been agreed to. On the police estimates being submitted, the Treasurer said if the Comncil voted it the Superintendent intended to take over the control of the police from the General Government. The item was passed. [We have received another message which is perfectly unintelligible.]
