THE HOSPITAL.

To the Editor

Sir,—Our Medical Officer of Health, Dr Cole, has come in for a share of abuse, which it is the habit of your morning contemporary, the ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ to pour out upon those who endeavor to put things in their true color before the public. Dr Cole is not abusive; he has written concerning this hospital (as far as myself, a layman, can judge) truthfully and without feeling.. Many of your readers will agree with him when he leads us to infer from the tenor of his report that the building is not for the purpose of a hospital. It is amusing how an ignorant writer, such as the one who wrote the censure iu this morning’s ‘ Times,’ will betray his own ignorance. For instance, he cavils at Dr Cole’s using the word “ wooden ” as applied to a wall. It would appear that the writer in question imagined that this term could only he applied to brick or stone structures. Let him turn up any dicj tionary and he will find it may be applied to any structure answering the purpose of a partition or defence. In conclusion, let me say that we want more men, and should welcome those we have who speak out boldly what they mean, and whose mouths are not tied down by party clique.— I am, &0., Observer. Dunedin, May 19.
