THE success which has attended the cst blishment of the Mosgiel Woollen Fa tory under the provisions of the Joint Stoc Companies Act, and the greater facilities ar extent to which such undei takings can be coi ducted hy a Company as compared with a pi vate individual, has led to the project of tl formation of a Company, with a view to tl purchase of the Tokomairiro Pottery Work now owned by Mr W. M. White, and crniduc mg the manufacture of Pottery and Eanhe somewhat comniensura with the large market presented in New Zealar and the other Australian Colonies, this heir the only Pottery Work established in tl Southern Hemisphere. u/ Th * e r ?VSl e . nt works were commenced by R W. 51, White about a year ago, since whit tune he has disposed of over L 3,000 worth , halt Glaze Pipes alone, the , market for whi< is steadily on the increase, and beyond the pr sent producing powers of the establishmen During this period Mr White hr s also devote a considerable porti n of his time and attei tion-to the preparation of the necessary buih ings and plant for the manufacture of a classes of Staffordshire Pottery Ware ‘ upo the most approved- principles and latest in provements in machinery used in Staffoidshin and recognised as the best and most economic) m the world The property is situated in tl centre of Milton

Mr W,. M. White has how ready for market large supplies of saleable articles for general - and .domestic purposes. The present time is, therefore; considered by the projectors of this Company the most favorable opportunity for entering upon the possession of the works, and pushing the manufacture and sale of Pottery- - ware in this and the adjoining Colonies. An estimate of the nature and extent of the available market may be arrived at from the fact that tne value of such imports into New Zealand alone for the year ending December last amounted to L 70.000, of which Otago alone imported L 22,000 worth of potteryware. The promoters have eveiy confidence that they will be enabled to supply the whole Colomal market, with any aiticle in potteryware, at a figure sufficiently low to compete successfully with the Home article, while securing a'larga margin- of profit to the Company, who have secured the services, as manager, of Mr Chet--ham, for thirty years proprietor of one of the largest English Potteries, and practically acquainted with the various processes adopted in every branch of the trade.’ The’services of the pi esent staff of over thirty thoroughly experienced hapds—brought from the Staffordshire Potteries direct, and now engaged upon the works, have also been obtained. _The projectors have agreed with Mr W. M. White to take over the Freehold Property, consisting of 1 hree Acres of Land surrounding the present centrally situated Works (secured with a to ; their future development), and the largo and substantial buildings, with plant and t v°oon frt - a /j- Uation est ™ated at, or about, L7,000 r including the General Government bonus of L3OO, Ihe amountrof goodwill, estimated at L 2,000, Mr White has resolved to nvest in the Company in paid-up shares to that amount, so confident is he in the bona Mas of the undertaking in the hands of a public Com projectors have also seemed from Mr White, his right obtained from the General government to remove clay from the lands adjqining the line of railway between Tokomairiro and the Clutha, which clay is allowed, by competent judges, to be equal to any found in England for manufacturing purposes. The (jovernment are now forming a siding to these • a y P 1 w kich are inexhaustible. The projected branch line to the Tokomairiro coal fields has also been surveyed to pass in front of the premises, the works will be in railway communication with he raw material, with uulirmted and cheap coal supplies, and with a port of shipment; as also with the metropolis and the larger townships of the Province likely to form good markets for sunnbea. form good markets for supplies, The projectors appeal for support with ever T.'sT t0 f t \ e re y, id - nts of Tokomairiro an! the settlers of the County of Bruce generally as the establishment of this industry has alroadtended greatly to develop the resources of tlr distnct.m opening up clay and coal mines, em ploying a large amount of outside labor in pro curing and carting timber, coal, and clay sup plies ; while the recent unexampled prosperity of the township of Milton has been greatly ad vanced by the presence in its midst of the lam-, number of employes—men, women, and clul dren -engaged upon the works, and wind would be greatly increased by a larger proprie tary possessed of increased capital to carry or the works to every advantage. J The promoters also confidently bring tin enterprise under the notice of the uenera public of Otago, as it is a well-known fact thai nothing so tends to advance the prosperity of £ country as the estabUshment of local industriei within its borders, Thus preventing the exporl of capital from the Colony for supplies of everyday requirements. . Apart from these conside rations, the enterprise of itself promises to be an amply remunerative and successful one.
