THE GOVERNOR AT PORT CHALMERS.

S Excellency the Governor, accompanied ]>y tne Marchioness of Nbmany, Lord Phipps, his Honor the Superintendent, and the Hon. Mr Campbell, paid a visit to Port Chalmers at noon to-day. They were received on the aru,v«l a * Port of the special train by the Mayor of Port Chalmers, several of the' Councillors, the lown Clerk, the Resident Magistrate, Surveyor of Customs, and other officials. The Mayor, m welcoming the Governor and Lady Normanby, stated that, owing to the short notice of his Excellency’s intention of visiting the Port, no time had been given to prepare a written address/ At tbe same time, ho assured his Excellency that the people of Port Chalmers were as loyal and devoted to her Majesty’s Government as any other community in her dominions. He had much pleasure in welcoming his Excellency to Port Chalmers, and regretted the season of the year did not permit his seeing it at its best. His Excellency responded in very complimentary terms, and the gubernatorial party were then conducted down the railway piers and to the Graving Dock. After the dock had been inspected, the party proceeded to the Provincial Hotel, where they partook of refreshments, but at his Excellency's request no toasts except the health of Lady Noimanby were proposed. On the railway platform Mr Taiaroa, M.H.R., introduced the cmrf fop! and others to his Excellency. His Excellency and party returned to town by special train shortly after three o’clock.
