IMMIGRATION.

To the Editor. Sir,—A few days since, while in the Dunedin Post-office, I was struck by the number o F people inside the building. At first I thought there must be a mail going out, but as I had heard nothing of an out-going mail on that day, I made inquiries as to what the stir was about and found out that the Post-office were in want of two youngmenasletter-carriers, and that such had been notified in the Evening Star the previous evening. I think I shall be inside the number of applicants by saying there were at least fifty, from eighteen to forty-five years of age. In last Monday’s issue an advertisement appeared for a packer in one of the warehouses in town. A shipmate of mine applied, and was told that he was the thirty-sixty applicant, ibis plainly shows that there are plenty out of employment, but still shiploads of emigrants are being sent out —what they arc going to do 1 can’t imagine. Several of my shipmates who can, and are willing to do any kind of work, have been trying in vain for employment for the last three months, .;nd have met with none, except one or two days’ pick and shovel work at 8s per day. Perhaps, being new chums ” like myself, they do not know the right way to set about getting employment bpt. at present, New Zealand to me does not seem the place to make and save money —I am. &0.,
