Christchurch, May 14 Last night the debate on the Estimates was resumed. The Oppositon strongly condemned the Estimates as unnecessarily alarming, and severely critic s sed the action of the Government respecting the attempt to withdraw from the contract for additions to the Museum. After six hours’ warm debate the motion for going into Committee of Supply was agreed to <jn the voices. On the motion of Mr A. C. Knight, the Government were instructed to prepare a scheme during the recess for providing retiring allowances for persons engaged in the Civil Service of ‘the Province.
The Provincial Secretary, replying to a question from ore of the opponents of the Museum being opened on Sundays, said that on wet Sundays the Museum was visited by 240 persons, and on dry Sundays by 930, or an average of 600 on each Sunday during the past six months.
