A hurried glance over the Estimates shows that the Government at last recognise the necessity of giving salaries to heads of departments, commensurate withj the responsibility attaching to the positions the latter hold Thus we find the salaries of the undermentioned officers raised as follows:—The Clerk to the Executive Council and Under-Secretary from ? aoler at Dunedin from law to ESOO, the bookkeeper in the Lands Department at Dunedin from L 250 to L3OO, the Chief Surveyor from LSOO to L6OO, the traffic u^nago 1 of Southland railways from L3OO to L 350, the station master at Invercargill from D2OO to L 250, the goods manager at Dunedin fr°m LlB7 to L 250, the Inspector of Works from L3OO to L 350, the sub-treasurer from L4OO to L6OO, the accountant In the Treasury rona to L 375, the chief harbor-master from L 460 to LSOO, the assistant harbormaster at the Huff from L3OO to L 325, and the
master at the Girls’ High School, from L 350 to LS7S. The senior sergeants, overseers, and act-ing-overseers at the gaol get a shilling a day extra, and provision is made in the police estimates for ten more constables. A number of new offices called into existence by onr railway system are provided for, the principal being an engineer of permanent way and rolling stock at L4OO ; an accountant and auditor at L 350; two inspectors of permanent wav at L 250 each; a chief clerk and accountant at Dunedin at L 25 0; a locomotive foreman at L 250, and an assistant railway engineer at L 350. Among other new offices are an assistant district engineer at L 30 0; and a sub-inspector of schools at L 350. The railway manager stands at LSOO ; and the item “ Deputy Harbor-Master, Dunedin,” has disappeared from the Estimates.
