TOWN EDITION.

THE GOVERNOR.

His Excellency the Governor was entertained at luncheon this afternoon by the member's of the Provincial Council. The library was turned into a dining-room for the time being, and served the purpose admirably. The caterers were Messrs Watson, who provided an excellent repast, and there was no reason to complain of want of good cheer. The Speaker of the Council (Mr J. L. Gillies) occupied the chair, and was supported on Us right by his Excellency, and the Hon. Dr Pollen, and on the left by his Honor the Superintendent. The Chairman of Committees (Mr E. M’Glashan) acted as vice-chairman. The Chairman proposed the health of Her Majesty the Queen, and the Vice-Chairman proposed the health of the Prince of Wales and the Royal Family in a speech which was pronounced to be most eloquent, and even poetical.

The health of his Excellency the Marquis of Mormanoy was proposed by his Honor the Superintendent and received with all the honors.

His Excellency, in responding, thanked the Council and the people of the ProTince for the warm welcome accorded te him; expressed his approbation of the enterprise shown by the people of the Colony in undertaking a vast scheme of public works; and while fiimly believing that that scheme would prove eminently successful, thought that the Colony should exercise the utmost prudence, and realise the fact that for the present they had gone far enough in carrying out a project which had been daunted In many other countries. He warmly eulogised the climate, the scenery,, and the resources of New Zealand, and concluded by proposing “Prosperity to the Province of Otago.”
