CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A special meeting of this body was held this afternoon, to consider the proposal of the Harbor Board to increase the jetty dues, and to levy the same on goods landed at the railway piers. Mr E. B. Cargill presided. The following resolutions, proposed by Mr Tewslbt, and seconded by Mr Mackerras, were adopted:— , “ This Chamber regards with very great interest the works of harbor improvement and construction of wharves and quays committed to the Otago Harbor Board, as being of the utmost importance to the trade of the Province at large and the future prosperity of the port of Otago.” “ The Chamber desires to express its cordial approval of the proposal of the Harbor Board to create a revenue for payment of interest and sinking fund on money to be borrowed for carrying out these works by dues to be levied upon all goods imported or exported through the port.” *3“ The Chamber, while viewing 'with satisfaction the valuable endowments in land to be reclaimed on the foreshore, from which the whole cost of the improvements may be ultimately defrayed, and the trade of the Board freed from the above temporary impost, would strongly deprecate any dealing with such lands in the way of sales or leases in anticipation of their reclamation, which could only be carried out at great pecuniary sacrifice, and might create serious obstacles in the event of any alteration of plans bring found necessary as the works proceed. “ That a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to the .Provincial Government.” On the motion of Mr Spence it was resolved “In the opinion of this Chamber the time has_ come when it., is necessary that telegraphic communication should be extended to the Hc:-'d=i, and that a copy of thi.i ie-o-lution be laid before the Commissioner of Customs by the Committee,”
