OTAGO INSTITUTE.

Thirty-five members attended the first meeting of that body, held last night, in the Univeisity Building. After Messrs D. S. Montague and J. A. Connell had been elected members, Mr Webb read a paper on ‘‘Solar Radiation,’ and described the observations made recently by Secchi, Soret, Pouillet. Encason, &c. Captain Hutton’s paper on “ The cause of the former extension of the glaciers m New Zealand,” in which the author maintained that the former elevation of the 7™* JP 10 ! 1 he relieved had been from 3,000 to 4,000 feet higher than now, was the causeof the extension of the glaciers, led to a very interest- ** Mr J. T, Thomson agreeing that the land had at one time been higher than it nowwas, but he did not believe the elevation was so great as stated by Cant. Hutton. On the 25th inst. Mr Connell will read a paper on ‘Colonial surveys, with special reference to Major Palmer’s report thereon.”
