ROAD BOARDS' CONFERENCE.
The conference of members of the several road boards in the Province, held at Murray’s Hotel to-day, to take into consideration some measures for the amendment of the present ordinance was attended by the lollbwing delegates : - Peninsula, W. Hooper; Portobello, W. M’Cartney; Caversham, R. Rutherford; Eoslyn, A. 0. Begg and A. H. Ross; North Taieri, John Andrew; Cqratorphine, David Andrew; North-east Valley, Isaac Green; Blneakin, Messrs Roger, Lean, and Close; Lyndtmrst, Andrew Kinross; Makerewa, Duncan M‘Arthur; Halfway Bush, Robert Rossbotham. Mr Rossbotham was voted to the chair. After a lengthy diicussion, it was resolved that a committee Jbe appointed to take the proposed resolutions into consideration, and t» further report on them at a meeting to be convened at an early date. The country delegates having retired, Mr Begg referred to the action of the City Corporation in proposing to get a Bill passed at the next meeting of the General Assembly, giving them power to absorb the suburban road districts, and to bring them within the boundaries of the City. He said that some members of the Corporation seemed to be under the impression that the suburban districts wished to he included in thd City boundaries; hi* this he (Mr Begg) characterised as a delusion on their part. He did not believe that if a poll of the people in the suburban districts was taken one in 100 would vote for the change. It would bo a bad day for the suburban districts when suoh an altera-; tloa was effected. If they amalgamated they' would lose their subsidy, besides having their rates increased. Mr Rutherford : If the districts were found unanimous, I don’t think the matter would be interfered with.—Mr Rossbotham thought an advantage would be gained by the suburbs if they were annexed to the City, as then the Corporation would have ±o supply them with gas and water.—Mr Begg moved that a petition he prepared to the Assembly with the object of ■preventing the proposed absorption of the suburban districts.- Mr Ross thought it would be better to bring the matter before each district.—lt was’ finally agreed to request Mr Ross to .draw up a petition to the Assembly, opposing the proposed, change; the petition to be signed by the member* Of each District Road Board.
