Dhdnkknkess.—Robert Stewart and Donald M'Sweeney were each fined ss, or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Slt-groq Selling.— Daniel Morrison, the keeper of a small store at Purokanui, was charged with having sold a quantity of liquor without a license. Mr Joyce defended. —Win. ? Hogan, revenue constable, said that on the 22nd of April, in company with Constable Wood and another man, he went into defendant’s store and called for three glasses of gin, which were supplied by the defendant, witness paying him Is fid for the liquor, which was gin. He did not tell defendant hj& was a runaway sailor looking for a job.—Robert Wood, revenue constable, gave similar evidence.—For the defence, Mr Joyce stated that the witnesses had gone Into defendant’s store, stating that they were runaway seamen looking for a job at the tunnel, and asked to be supplied with liquor, and upon these pntreatfes defendant supplied them, but not with gin. He hoped his Worship woufd inflitf the lowest, penalty. His Worship, in giving judgment, said the revenue constables appeared to have acted in a very fair manner. This being the first case in the port he would adopt the same course as in Dunedin, and inflict a fine of L2O. A second case against the defendant was withdrawn.—James Baird, of Deborah Bay, was then charged with selling three glasses of whiskey to William Hpgan* revenue constable, on the 22nd of April. This case was dismissed, owing to the insufficiency (Of the evidence to convict, Ids Worship remarking that the charge should hate neon “’.•suffering to sell.”—Sergeant Neil then stated that it was his intention to lay an information agtvmst Mrs Baird.
