Greymouth, May 5. An adjourned meeting of the Greymouth Goal Company was held on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance of local shareholders. The report of the mining manager suggested sinking the main shaft 300 feet, at an estimated cost of L 4,540, which, with a seam sixteen feet thick, would yield the first year 150 tons of coal daily, at a profit of five shillings per ton, in addition to the profit from the sale of coke. During the second year the yield of coal would considerably increase. IX' Morice, the representative of the Dunedin shareholders, moved an amendment against adopting the report and balance-sheet, and that the meeting be adjourned for one month, and that all expenditure in connection with the mine and sinking the new shaft be discontinued. The resolution was adopted, and the report and balance-sheet carried by 794 votes against 125 votes recorded by Dunedin proxies. The retiring directors were unanimously re-elected.
Wellington, May 6. In the Provincial Council, last night, Mr Hutchison’s motion requesting the Council to assist in carrying out the resolution of the General Government for abolishing the Provinces in the North Island was defeated by 19 to 4, Mr Bunny having moved the previous question.
Auckland, May 5. The ‘ Southern Cross ’ newspaper company’s annual meeting has been held. The report showed receipts of L 13,570; credit balance on the year’s transactions, L 427. No dividend was declared.
Timauu, May 6. The Governor stayed here only one night, and in consequence great dissatisfaction was expressed. Bishop Redwood was received with a great demonstration.
Thomas Davis, charged with attempting to poison his wife, has been committed for trial. Bail was refused.
Large quantities of grain are stored here under tarpaulins, the farmers holding for a rise in price,
Christchurch, May 0. It is stated on good authority that the cabmen da not intend proceeding to further litigation with the City Council, but will accept the scale of fares laid down in the new bye-law. EThe salmon ova continues to go bad daily, and only a few are left in the boxes, Six of the birds received per Tintern Abbey died, but the remainder look very healthy. The Government, have given formal notice lo the contractors for the additions to the museum to suspend work until after tho Appropriation Ordinance has been passed, l w hen in the dock this morning, looked ill and anxious. After the hearing he was admitted to bail, himself in L6OO, and two sureties of L3OO each. The total defalcations are expected to amount to nearly L 7,000, Frederick Pavitt, late steward of the Church .Property Trust Estate, was arrested last night on a charge of embezzlement. It is rumored a t l ™™ 10n ? “mount to between L 5.000 Pavitt was brought up at the Resident Magistrates Court this morning, charged with the embezzlement of L 797 from the funds of the Church Property Estate. The prisoner had filled the position of steward for nine years, and his salary of lateJwasSUOO per annum. The defalcations were found., out
while he was absent from his duties owing to illness. When spoken to about the matter, he expressed great regret that Church funds should suffer through his sin, and said the defalcations were due to losses iu flax speculations, and offered to surrender all bis furniture and debt? to the trustees. Two other informations having been laid against him this morning ho was remanded until May Id. Tim prisoner appeared to feel his position very acutely. Prior to this event, he was held in high respect by all who knew him. He has several brothers in Canterbury, all of whom arc greatly respected. N elson, May <>. The Hou. N. Edwards has been elected Provincial Councillor for the City. He said he thought it but fair to state that iu the Assembly he meant to support the abolition of Provinces throughout the Colony, The statement was received with loud cheers. {From our own Correspondents.) Auckland, May 5. The Shipwrights’Protection Society is getting so powerful that it almost dictates terms to the employers. The men employed in one yard have struck because an over-age apprentice has ueeu indentured. Lawrence, May G. The flood at Waipori River has broken into the Sludge Channel. It is not yet known what is the extent of the damage. THE GOVERNOR AT OAMARU. O AMARU, May 6. The Governor accompanied by Lady Normauby, the Hou. Dr Pollen, Mr Rolleston, Mr Macandrew, and Sir Dillon Bell, arrived at the Tou»i Belt at ton this morning, where they were met by the Mayor and Councillors and proceeded to the Council Chamber's, where the volunteers were drawn up, who presented arms and fired a salute. An address was presented by the Municipal Council. The vice-regal party proceeded by train to die Breakwater, where an address was presented by the Harbor Board. ‘J he Governor christened the wharf “ Macandrew Wharf,” and Mr Macandrew declared the wharf open for traffic. The party were shown over the wharf, and a block of 20 tons of concrete was lifted and laid. The wharf works were inspected, and the Eldersjie, of 350 tons burthen, the first vessel alongside the wharf, was there. The party returned by train to town, A lunch takes place at 12.30 p.m. iu the Volunteers’ Hall, the Harbor Board being the hosts. The decorations and preparations were most elaborate.
