Wanganui, tor Bluff, May 5. The s.s. Ladybird, for Northern Ports, took her departure from the railway pier shortly after the arrival of the 9.30 a.m. train yesterday. The s.s. Express, after transhipping the Southern portion of the San Francisco mail from the Taranaki, sailed on Saturday evening on her usual trio to the Bluff. 1 The Harbor Company’s s.s. Maori returned from her Oamaru trip at 4.40 p.m. ou Saturday. After discharging wool at the ship Rangatikei,'she passed up to Dunedin. The s.s. Wanganui arrived alongside the old jetty at 8.30 a.m. yesterday, from the Bluff, which port she left at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Had light winds as far the Nuggets, wheu she had strong S.W. winds till ai rival. AVc (‘ N. O. Times *) have been shown, by one of the men employed on the beach, a piece of painted wood winch had apparently farmed a portion of a ship’s ladder. The timber is kauri, with oak paintntg. It wia picked up ou what is known asthe bandy Beach, together with a number of pieces of pme planking. The above may possibly form a portion of one of the missing vessels. The ship Timaru, from Glasgow via the Bluff, and barque Union, from Newcastle, are still lying at the Heads on account of the heavy S.W. wind which prevailed yosterd ay. The tug Geelong, after gett mg up steam and proceeding outside, was unable to take the ship in tow and returned to port. She reports that the barque Union has dragged her anchors for at least two miles since Saturday As soou as the weather moderates the tug will proceed down again and tow up the 1 imaru. The N.Z.S.S, Company’s s.s. Taranaki, with the inward mails via San Francisco, arrived at Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. ou Saturday, under the command o: Captain Mimclle, Captain Llovd being compelled through illness to remain in Wellington She left the Manukau at 12.30 p.m. on the 20ili April, called at Taranaki, Nelson, Pictou, Wellington, and Lyttelton, which latter port she left at 4 р. ou the 30t,h, and arrived as abovo. Experienced light and variable winds from the Manukau to Lyttelton, and from thence a strong S.W. gale with a heavy head sea. Wc thank her purser, Mr Kdiuiiiston, for report and Northern exchanges. The barque Duke of Edinburgh, with a cargo of coal from Newcastle, was towed to her anchorage on Saturday evening by the tug Geelong. She left Newcastle on the 19th ult., and experienced east to northerly winds and flue weather until making the Solauders ou the 26th, wheu she got a strong cast wmd ; sighted the whaling barque Chance “same night off the West Cape. The wind shifted to the westward on the 29tb, which continued till off Waipaya Point, wheu it shifted to the E.N.E., and continued until 4 p.m. ou the 30th; arrived at the Heads at daylight on the Ist iust., and was towed C , apta “ l Samson repots the barque 1 -c. fci and the brig Iransport loading piles at Newс. for this port.
