THE WATER SUPPLY.
. - - To the Editor. ' SlB, —In the. ■ Guardian ’of yesterday I noticed an article expressive of approval of the municipal authorities in respect to the supply of water to the inhabitants who have been •without any water for domestic use for the last four or five days. This is the opinion of the writer of the ‘ Guardian,’ who probably is living on one of the flats, and has not experienced the sufferings of those who are living in higher places. It is hard to believe but that the article is intended as biting ridicule instead of approval. Sir, for one month it has been known to everyone, not excepting the Corporation, that the water was falling rapidly in the reservoir, and yet nothing was done to stop the waste of water which was going on under their sanction. For the last ten days it has been known to every person that the water was falling foot by foot dally, that hundreds, yea, thousands, were deprived of a supply: of i water for domestic user still the Corporation remained inactive. At last the supply gave out rimthe lower levels—the pressure was not sufficient to drive machinery. Then thp authorities made a bold effort, “became equal to the occasion,” and stopped the supply of water for driving machinery when there was not sufficient force left in it for that purpose. And now what are the authorities doing? Are they doing their best to supply water to those who are and have been without it for four or five days ? No, they are not. I believe they have managed to secure four water carts to supply water at the rate of two -buckets for each family for every day or two days, being at the rate, in some cases, of oner pint of water for.each , person for drinking and cooking purppses.—l am, Ac,, Dunedin, May 1.
