THE VOLUNTEERS.
To the Editor.
Sib, —As a Volunteer, I read with pain and disgust the article in this morning’s ‘ Guardian’ on the adjutancy of this district. A more insulting and indiscreet article could not have been penned. Justice alone requires that a man should be. tried before being subjected to suoh condemnation as your contemporary visits Sub-Inspector Ronan with. It may interest the ‘ Guardian ’to know that Mr Ronan held a commission in the 20th; possesses a certificate of competency as a drill instructor; that his name appears in the Army List; and that his zeal and intelligence as an officer of the Armed Constabulary have not escaped the notice of the Defence Minister—hence, doubtless, bis appointment to the adjutancy of this district. Volunteers want a good man at their head they care not whence he comes. The motive of the ‘ Guardian’s ’ article is transparent. Can the writer point to a single Volunteer officer in Otago who is fit to be made adjutant of the district. —I am. &c,. No 1. Dunedin, Apri 1 24.
