THE GOVERNOR IN CANTERBURY.

mu rvx- , Chbistchubch, April 23. The Citizens Ball, in honor of the Governor and Lady Normanby, last night, was a great success. About 250 ladies and gentlemen were present. The Governor opened the ball with Mrs Ivolleston, the Superintendent dancing with Lady Normanby, the Mayor with Mrs Packs, and Colonel Packe with the Mayoress. At the supper the toast of the Governor was proposed by the Superintendent in complimentary terms, and his Excellency in replying said that he was astonished at the evidences of progress seen on every hand since his arrival He had been in many young Colonies, but few showed more stnkingproofs of go-ahoadism than Canterbury. To-day the Governor and Lady ormanby attend the races. The weather is dull but fine, and the races promise to be a great success.
