„ Hokitika, April 17. -1 he Provincial Council has been prorogued. The Superintendent assented to the several Ordinances passed during the Session. In his closing speech he expressed regret that the important Bills submitted by the Government providing for the reconstitution of Road Boards, and to amend the Public House Ordinance, had not met with the concurrence of the Council.

At a meeting of the Hospital Committee last evening, the question of handing over the local Hospital to the Provincial Government, to be maintained wholly as a Provincial institution, was partially discussed, and adjourned for consideration by a special meeting to be held on Monday evening.
_ , Westport, April 17. Exceedingly rich stone has been struck in the Halcyon claim at Mohikinui. Twenty ounces of ioose gold were obtained in one blast of rock. Ihe body of the stone is calculated to yield 15 ounces to the ton.
.. . Christchurch, April 17. At an inquest this afternoon, a verdict of was against Janet M Kinley for causing the death of her infant child. The circumstances of the case are these On Monday last the husband of Janet M Kinley was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for brutally assaulting his wife, who had only been confined ten days before. On Tuesday Mrs M’Kinley drew a sum of money owing to her husband, and lay about in the unnking whisky, which she sent her children for, until Friday, when, acting on information received, the police went to her house and found her in bed very drunk, with her infant lying behind her dead. The whole place and the children were in a filthy state. t eD « e t * ie inquest showed that Mrs Kmley first found that the infant was dead on Thumday morning, or about thirty hours before the pohee went to the house. During this time she was continually the worse for liquor, and had taken no steps for the removal a e ,dead body. The medical evidence proved that the child died from want of food and general neglect.
Charles James, who was arrested m Auckland for embezzling monies belonging to the Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge of Oddfellows, of which he was treasurer, was brought up on Satuaday, and remanded till Thursday. The general opinion is that he will get off.
