THE WAIKOUAITI ELECTION.

SOn Thursday evening Mr George M‘l ean aderaed a meeting of electors at Palmei ston, and in the course of his remarks said :— I had a conversation with Mr Rich this afternoon, and he seems much hurt at a passage in the speech I deuveied at Waikouaiti, viz., that he (Mr Rich) “stooped to wilful misrepresentation meaning that he willingly told an untruth. I desire to take this opportunity of denying that I ever intended or wished to convey such an imEression, and if Mr Rich or any of his friends ave put such a construction on my remarks. X beg to apologise for using them. At the conclusion of Mr M‘Lean’s address he was asked the following questions : Mr 0. H aynes : Do you consider justice has been meted out to this district since the Public Works Scheme was initiated. M’Lban; No ; I do not consider justice has * been done to this district ? Mr Fagan : Was the motion you got carried in the Assembly in 1871 re the survey of the Dunedin-Moeraki line of railway not brought about through a petition forwarded to you from this district asking for the same ? Mr M‘Lean ; No ; I never received or heard ~ of a petition. Mr Fagan : Did you not consider it your duty ‘to oppose the construction of the i oko-mairiio-Tuapeka line as a main line of railway, - until that portion of the main trunk line passing through our district was first Mr M‘Lean : I did not consider it my duty to oppose the measure, as it was for the benefit of the Province.
