ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

At the annual meeting of the above Society held last night, the committee reported in reference to the past year's transactions as follows:

In April, 1873, a credit balance was brought forward of L 5, there being outstanding liabilities of at least LlO, thereby leaving an aotual debt on the Society of L 5. Great difficulty waa then experienced in making up a committee to act in carrying on the business, some of those elected refusing to act. During that season two exhibitions were held, but no prize-money awarded; and the year ended with a cash balance of about L 5 10s, together with property to the value of, say L4O. During the past season two exhibitions have been held in the Tem perance Hallj and the takings at the door for the last four shows, extending over two years, has averaged L 25 10s—an amount which will compare favorably with past years. Prize money to the extent of L7O, including money prises, gifts, and medals, has been awarded, and there still remains a sum of LSO to the credit of the Society, thereby showing that the Sodety is steadily advancing in a financial point of w *. th» past year, there has been experienced considerable difficulty in collecting funds and inducing competing members to come forward. The competition generally had been confined to a few, and this referred more particularly to the gardeners, who do not show-that spirit of emulation in endeavoring to support a Society of this kind, that should reasonably be expected of them; and imfouß the Society is more fully supported in this respect, it will never command the patronage of the public to any large extent. Silver medals had been awarded in the gardeners’ clauses to Mr A Qebbie (two) in the amateur class to Mr R. Hay, and for a model garden to MrC. l aurenoe.

Office-bearers were elected as follows President, Mr B. Sievwright; Vice-Pi«si-dent, Mr G. Matthews ; Treasurer, Mr W. B. Ogilvle; Secretary, Mr T. A. Hislop. The Committee were elected as follows: Messrs K. Hay, C. Lawrence, A. Begg, / , 'Xrant, K. Mackay, G. K.. Turton, 11 Pledger, A, Mackiulay, H. Kirkpatrick and G. XL West, Auditor, Mr H. Wise.
