CITY COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting held last night was attended by the Mayor, Crs. Prosser, Mercer, Barron, Grant, Gibson. Reeves, Beck, ■ pnncipaljbusineas transacted The Superintendent wrote enclosing a letter from Dr Hulme, stating that it was not necessary at present to have a separate fever ward at the Hospital; but in oases of small-pox oi; malignant scarlet fever, there should be a pliwe set apart in the outskirts 6f the City. Residents in York place wrote regretting the Council had looked at their claim for edmpensatum from a legal point of view, and they asked that it be considered as a matter of equity. It was agreed that this memorial should receive consideration. iL TheOity Surveyor drew attention to the fact that the Rattray street sewer has been extended towards the bay for a distance of nine chains, and therefore, in his opinion, no neoessity now existed for the construction! of cesspools to intercept solid ' matter of night toil, nr for insisting that night soil should be prevented from entering the public sewers, As when Die Rattray Bewer discharged at the comer of Rattray and Crawford streets. Referred to the Public Works Committee. In view of the expiration of the temporary arrangement under which Mr T. Dick transferred to the Council his services as waterworks secretary, the Waterworks Committee recommended that from June 30 tho whole office *°fj c JJ® placed under the immediate direction ■pf the Town Clerk. Mr Dick having expressed * P r ®l® r ® nce to retire, and the present plan of divided responsibility not being found to work well in all points. In answer to a question by Or. Beck as to how matters between the Corporation and Corporation tenants, concerning Die Princes street widening, were getting on, the Mato* said he intended to get a copy of the bond, and have it submitted to a meeting of XDounciL before it would be signed by him _Cr. Paossßß’a motion—** That after the new Act comes into force, all kerbing and channelling not yet constructed be paid for out of a loan to be raised for the purpose ; and that the interest and sinldng fund upon the same be raised by a special rate to be levied ujpon the property benefited,” was, after discussion, negatived. '
