A fire at the Native settlement of Orakai destroyed five whares and two storehouses that contained the winter stock of potatoes. The whole settlement, men, women, and children, turned out with branches and beat down the flames.

Christchurch, April 13. In the Supreme Court to-day Thos. Weir was found guilty of obtaining by false pretences 250 comsacks from Robert Wilkin, and sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. The last case on the criminal list is now being tried. King Phillip is first favorite for the Autumn Handicap, and Daniel O’Rorke for the Champagne Stakes.

Lawrence, April 13. A large number of applicants are here applying for deferred payment sections in the Heriot Hundred. The demand for land is stronger than ever.
