DEPUTATIONS.
To-day, two deputations waited upon the Edward Richardson to state the merits or the two different propositions regarding the construction of a railway to connect Outram with the Dunedin and Cluth line. The first was introduced by Mr J. H. Harris, solicitor to the company, and included Messrs Shand, M.P.C., Smyth, and others. Their abject was to ascertain the terms on which the General Government would provide rolling stock and plant and work the railwt-y. he Minister of Public ,Works said he was not in a position to give a definite reply, as all the particulars of the plan were not before him, and he would therefore recommend that full information should be laid before the Government for consideration. The second deputation was*of a similar character, and had the same object in view. They expressed their intention of opposing the construction of the other line at every stage, both in public and before Parliament. Mr Richardson returned a similar answer. In the course of conversation, the Hon. Mr Richardson said the Government had no desire to oppose any undertaking carried out in a legal way; but there were certain ruless which must be followed. It would only be a few weeks before Parliament *ud then their wants might be attended to, Wg understand that Mr Richardson has instructed the District Engineer to report on the respective merits of the two lines.
