I> TBBOABGJLL, April 8. A melancholy case of sudden death occurred this evening. Mr H. T. Ross, a well-known merchant here, had been spending the day at the Bluff, and when the train started thence at four o’clock appeared in his usual health and spirits. He seemed to drop off to sleep twenty minutes -before the train reach’d town, and little notice was taken of him by those in the same {compartment, but on the arrival of the train he was found dead. The cause of death is supposed to bo an apoplectic fit.
Gbetmodth, Aprils, In an article upon the alleged complaints of the Dunedin shareholders iu the Greymouth Goal Company, the ‘Grey River Argus’ defends the manager, and points out that delay is the only thing that prevents the mine being profitably worked, and refers to the fact that the local directors are the heaviest holders in the Company, a guarantee of careful administration.
Wellington, April 9. The ‘ N. Z. Times ’ has an article upon the way the Hutt railway is being managed. After stating various grievances of the employes, which are mainly long hours, insufficient pay, and want of promptitude in paying their monthly wages, it says, “The safety of the people of Wellington is certainly endangered by the enormous amout of work expected from the small working staff at Pipitea.”
Auckland, April 9. The nomination of candidates for the seat in the Assembly, vacated by Mr Williamson’s Seath, was held at noon. Messrs Dignan and . M. Dargaville were proposed, and the show of bands was—Dignan, 65; Dargaville, 47. The poll will be taken on Wednesday next.
