CITY POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, April 7. (Before Messrs H. S. Fish, jun., and T. Birch. Esq.s, J.P.8.)

Fighting.—Richard Beattie, for this offence, was fined 10s ? or twenty-four hours’ imprisonment.—A similar charge against John Dennison was dismissed.

Thefts.—David Tupner was charged with stealing from the workshop of Messrs Watson and Gow, a plane and a rule, valued at about 15s. Ho was sentenced to one mouth’s imprisonment with hard labor.—John Vivian, a boy eight years of age, was charged with stealing from. Mr Matthews, gardener, two bags of turnips j and, as he was a neglected child, was sent to the Industrial School for five years, to be brought up in the Church of England form of religion. Stealing Metal. Elisha Harris was charged by the police with having, on the 2nd April, stolen a quantity of metal from A. and T. Burt’s, ef the value of 3s. Mr Bathgate appeared for the accused. —Detective Shury said that on the 2nd inst., while going along Princes street, in company with Detective Bain, he met the accused, with the metal under his coat. He asked him where he got it, and he replied from a tall man on the Stuart street jetty, whom he did not know.—Alex. Burt of the firm of A. and T. Burt, said that he purchased some metal from Nelson on the 26th October. After accused’s arrest, they found that there was lewt Xqr 111b missing. Andrew Waddell and John Crawford, in the employ of Messrs A. and T. Burt, deposed to having seen accused about the premises on the day in question.-Detective Bain, who arrested Erisoner, gave similar evidence to that of •etective Shury.—He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. Fraud. -Louis Stewart was charged with obtaining from Flora Carter the sum of L 4 10a for a valueless cheque. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
