PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held last evening, when there were present —The Mayor, Crs. Rose, M'Gregor, Asher, M‘Kenzie, Menelaus, Middleditch, Miller, and Dodson. A letter was read from Mr Proudfoot requesting permission to cross footpaths in Grey street, for the purpose of removing earth for reclamation; and it was agreed to grant permission, subject to the usual conditions. Permission was also granted to Mr G. L. Asher to light a fire at the back of the Wesleyan Church on the occasion of the anniversary tea meeting. The Reserves Committee reported as follows: —That the boundary line between Sutherland and Co.’s and W. Jackson’s has been satisfactorily pointed out to the parties concerned, and recommend that before leasing Boiler Point to Mr Perkins that tenders should be calledthat the Inspector of Works be 1 autho* rised to do what is necessary in front of Mrs Louden’s property, and that tenders be called for breaking 100 yards of metal for general purposes. The report of the Water and Finance Committee was then read, from which it appeared they had finally arranged to pay Mr Wright the’sum of L4OO for what land the Council required with the right of road to the reservoir site, and Mr Elmer’s property the advantages of securing the road beingtwofold:— Ist. The Council will have a good road to their property without the expense of maintenance ; 2ua. They will not be required to purchase the road now leased from Mr Perry. With regard to Mr Austin’s road they have secured the lease of the same for L2O. Mr Elmer’s claim for L 360 has been paid, also Mr Austin’s for L 950, and Mr Joyce’s for LSO. The committee further recommended that all accounts under the Waterworks Loan be referred to the Finance Committee. The contractor has been put in possession of the land necessary for the construction of the works, and Mr Austin has the machinery taken down and in course of removal, and the works are proceeding satisfactorily, the site having been cleared and about twenty men employed. The report was adopted. It was also carried that the seal of the Corporation be attached to the agreement between Mr Elmer and the Corporation for the sale of land, &o.
Correspondence was read from Captain Thomson informing the Council that he had found the lease of section 156, and was quite willing to pay up all arrears and taxes. —Apf dications were then opened from persons wiling to undertake the office of Inspector of Works. There we o eighteen applicants, and a committee consisting of Crs M‘Gregor, Dodson, Middleditch and Miller, was appointed to go over the list of applicants, and choose a few from them to be submitted to the Engineer for his approval, and finally returned to the Council in order to their selection of one from the number.
