THE FASHIONS.

A lady correspondent of the ’Australasian,’ writing from London by the last mail, says : —“I have to record an important aud summary alteration in the laws of fashion. The “dress improver” is banished. Skirts cut like riding habits, with cuirass bodices, and the under petticoat without plait or crease bo that the gown may fit perfectly flat to th® figure, are to be “your* only wear.” The petticoats must be velvet, the skirts very thick woollen stuff, and the trimming expensive fur. I saw a great lady yesterday arrayed in “ a riding-coat ” like those which the Jessatuy brides went away with their bridegrooms in, with a long tight skirt, and a little three-cornered tippet, and the wearer had a charming little sable hat which fitted close to the top of her head, and looked very piquant and pretty. As a small detail of the toilet I may mention that plain linen collars and cuffs are “out,” and ruches of Valencia nnea and guipure lace have replaced them. In the best society in Paris there is a reaction against the taboo of all jewellery except diamonds which led last year to much >vigh extravagance, and also to many heartburnings among the women who did not possess and could not procure the ornaments r&fyPMT* Parures in gold, without precions stones, will be chic this season, and the the last year are to be discarded for noh dark colors.
