MOSGIEL.

_ Mosgiel, April 6. The past week has been strong for us in races, fights, fires, &c., and it is well for Mr CraWford’a contract (Silversiream) we had no flood. His work has been inspected and passed, bo in the event of one coming now it has only to keep the channel made, without entailing loss to its constructors. But I have grave doubts as to the sides of the channel keeping up. That, however, should be the care of those directly interested. The Government has done to part well, and conservators should be appointed to look after and secure the work. Towards Greytown the locomotive happens at times to knock over and 101 l any stray cows that may Come in its way. On Friday something of this kind occurred, and resulted in rousing the ire of the proprietor of two cows, and although our loom constable stationed at Ontram has had a busy time of late, he was duly infonned he was required, as something very serious had occurred. However the temper of the cowman had subsided without any overt act by Saturday, and with a warning to'behave himself and keep his cows from f;oing in front of the engine in future, he was eft to ruminate over his loss. The bridge across the Taieri at Greytown is nearing _ completion j all the piles are driven, and stringers are being placed. It looks a Strong, heavy structure. Humor says that we are to have a police station, a money-order office, and savings’ bank ere long—desiderata much required.
