Assault. George Murdoch, professional rmmer, charged with being drunk in Maolaggan street on the previous day, with using obscene ™ gt i ag * on tbe Taiari road on Easter Monday, and with assaulting Robert Anderson on March 31, pleaded guilty to each offence.— hrom the evidence .given in the latter charge it appeared that accused, on meeting complainant, asked him for matches, and when they were given to him assaulted and kicked complainant. On the latter going away accused followed him and committed a senes of assaults When remonstrated with by one Wm. Fen-’ more, who was passing, accused threatened to subject him to similar treatment.—Detective Hhury said that accused was given to drink, and that several complaints had been made te the police of robberies from brothels, of which ho was suspected. In 1871 he was senttnoed to twelve months’ imprisonment for assault with Intent to rob.—For being drunk he was lined 20s, in default three days imprisonment * and for using obscene, language, L 3 or one one month. The assault the Bench considered was unprovoked and brutal, and had the detestable element of kicking introduced into it. ■Prisoner was sentenced to the full term of Impnaonment allowed by the Act—two morths' mth hard labor—the sentence to take effect after the expiring of the other sentences. DISTUBBANCa OS THE RaOECODRBE. William Richardson, for conducting himself in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace, at the Forbnry race-course, on March 35, was fined 20s, and for resisting the police constable who endeavored to arrest him at Moagiel yesterday, 10s. William M‘Derfo* B taking several persons with a ndmg-whm the Mosgiel race-course yesterday, was fined 40s.
Trespass. —Christian Veet, charged with having been found sleeping in the railway goodg-shed (now in course of construction) last ni ßht, was discharged with a caution. Dbunkbnness. -George OaU wag fined ss. with the usual alternative. Breach OP the Peace.— Samuel Haines and Henry Prince were charged with comcomxmttmg a breach of the peace by fighting on the Southern Oval, on Saturday, March 27. —Haines did not appear, and Inspector Mallard asked that as he had gone to Christchurch before the police could get the summons served, they should bo allowed to withdraw th© charge against Prince, without prejudice to a fresh information being laid when he could get Haines served.—This course was adopted.
