FATAL ACCIDENT AT PORT CHALMERS.
An inquest was held this afternoon in the Court-house, Port Chalmers, before Dr O’Donoghue, District Coroner, and a Jury of 12, upon the remains of a man named George Smith, who met hh death by a fall of earth in George street yesterday. After hearing evidence from the following witnesses :—George Blackwell (ganger), Geo. L. Asher, and Henry Chsriton. After deliberation, the jury arrived at the following verdict: Smith was accidentally killed while working in a cutting in George street, Port Chalmers, to which the following rider was added :—“And we would recommend the Government to pass an Act restricting the height of earth to be failed to (say) ten feet, and also that contractors be required to provide efficient supervision over works of this kind.”
