THE CALEDONIAN GATHERING
The sports to-day were well attended, there being fully 4,000 people on the ground at one o’clock, and others continually pouring in. The great event of the day—the wrestling match between Robertson and Tyson, for LSO and the Society’s belt, unfortunately fell through, owing to Tyson having injured his knee last week. His opponent agreed so postpone the match for a time, and accept LlO as a forfeit. The first event was tho 220 Yabds Handicap Race.— Heats, Prizes. L 4, L2, and LL ? ,G. Lindsay (10 yds) ... ... ... 1 G. Murdoch (10 yds) 2 W. J. Burke (4 yds) 3 For the first heat four started, Henderson (4 yard?) winning easily by three yards. All four were together when three-quarters round, but then Nightingale (10 yards) stumbled and fell back ; . and a few ya r ds further on Robertson (8 yards) slipped and fell heavily—Sfcanbrook (7 yards) and Nightingale staggering over him. Stanbrook was thus a bad second to Henderson. The second heat avas a ridiculous affair. G. Murdoch (10 yards) keeping hia lead all round, Buchanan (scratch) second. Five started, including Helmsley and Donaldson. For the third heat seven stripped and it was won by Lindsay (10 yards), who led throughout; Burke (4 yards) running past his men well, and coming in second at his ease. In the final heat Buchanan rushed up to the field at a great pace, but Lindsay and Murdoch could not be reached, and came in an easy first and second : Burke third. Time, 2&i*ec. GYMNASTICS A number of difficult feats were gone through by Mr Long- and some of his junior pupils both on the horizontal bar and the wooden borne. Quarter-Mule Handicap Race. -Prizes, L 4. L2, and Ll. G. Lindsay (18 yds) 1 W. Henderson (11 yds) ... ... 2 W. J. Burke (scratch) 3 A goodstarft was effected, though Burke got offperhapswo rst. Aarons (25 yds.), cutoutthe running for the first round, but fell in the second.. Liaßsay then took first, place; Burke, who had eome through all the others, running second, Hendershn third. Burke appeared at one time to be coming with one of his usual rushes, but Lindsay kept his lead, and won comfortably by three yards Burke fell within two yards of the post, and Henderson got second place.
